  • Think you know what to expect in 2010?

    Consider this:

QB Marc Bulger----A.J. Feeley or Sam Bradford
    RB Steven Jackson----Steven Jackson
    FB Mike Karney----Mike Karney
    WR Donnie Avery----Donnie Avery
    WR Laurent Robinson----Laurent Robinson
    TE Randy McMichael----Daniel Fells
    LOT Alex Barron----Jason Smith
    LOG Jacob Bell----Jacob Bell
    C Jason Brown----Jason Brown
ROB Richie Incognito----John Greco or Hank Fraley
    ROT Jason Smith----Rodger Saffold

    DE Leonard Little----Chris Long
DT Clifton Ryan----Clifton Ryan or Fred Robbins
DT Gary Gibson----Fred Robbins or Darrell Scott
    DE James Hall----James Hall
    WLB Will Witherspoon----Bobby Carpenter
    MLB James Laurinaitis----James Laurinatis
    SLB Dave Vobora----Na'il Diggs
    CB Ron Bartell----Ron Bartell
CB Jonathan Wade----Brad Fletcher or Jerome Murphy
FS O.J. Atogwe----O.J. Atogwe/Craig Dahl or Kevin Payne
    SS James Butler----James Butler

In comparing the opening day starting lineup for 2009 to the likely starters in 2010, ten out of twenty-two positions definitely have new starters (in blue) while two others might have new starters (in grey).

The players in bold are no longer with the team.

The players in italics are new to the team.

And these are just the starters. Other players who were not on the team at the start of 2009 who are may contribute this year include Mardy Gilyard, Brandon Gibson, Michael Hoomanawanui, Kevin Dockery and, who knows, maybe some diamond-in-the-rough from the draft. And, of course, its a pretty good bet that the Rams will add another RB to the roster before the season starts.

Will the team be significantly better?

    I don't know.

But it is a different team from the one that took the field at the start of 2009.

I have to say your dedicated. Thanks for taking the time to do so. You almost make me change my mind on how many game we are going to win. "with a deep breath" 9 maybe? Maybe teams look past us? It would be cool.

that's a lot of changes, i'm interested to see some of the o-line and d-line competition and how the rotation will end up, same with linebackers. i also think payne might have more of a chance than people think of starting on the strong side, he was very productive with the bears there before they moved him to free safety.

Yeah Butler isn't a lock, and I would like to see him pushed at SS as Payne can play some ball. I'd rather see him at SS than FS for sure.

Curious to see if Jerome Murphy gets some snaps at FS is Atogwe isn't resigned.

Re: Think you know what to expect in 2010?

Our secondary leaps and bounds better than last years IMO, especialy if OJ comes back. IMO its also the deepest part of our team. I like that especially since the league is more of a passing league.

I think we are going to use our nickel and dime packages alot. We know Laurantis is a beast in the middle we just need one LB to play well next to him and the other guy to be solid probably as a 2 down player. Carpenter I think can be that guy to step up next to Lauranatis. The D-line definately young and talented, but those young guys are going to have to turn that talent to production I think Spags can guide them in that direction.

Definitely more questions on offense. The O-line if healthy looks like they probably won't give up 40+ sacks. We also have much better depth on the interior offensive line. Depth on the outside not as good, so the Rams are counting on there 2 young bookends. At TE and Receiver there are definately young and able candidates its just a matter of stepping up and playing well for Bradford.

I wish we could trade for A.J Hawk. I love Ohio State linebackers.

I would prefer Jerome Murphy to play corner, to make a solid trio at our cornerback corps.

Having three good young corners to shut down receivers creates a lot less pressure on our safeties.

After a 1-15 season we should not be surprised by all the changes. I think there are still more changes coming.

A corner whose strength is press coverage and run support; and whose weakness of off-man coverage............and put him at FS?

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see that as an intuitive move.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

The key to this is OJ for sure. He is the cog that keeps that defense in place and is one of the best ballhawks in the league. One more pass rushed is needed as well. I would love to bring back Leonard little or maybe a Charles grant ( I know he's out the first 4 games( who could be had for a song now.

To many holes to fill. If healthy the following could give us a decent season IMO.
                      by RamsSB99
Assuming we have an uncapped year here are the unrestricted free agents I would like to see the Rams go after.

                      Unrestricted Free Agents:
                      Leigh Bodden CB 6'1 195
                      Ben Watson TE 6'3 255
Julius Peppers DE 6'7 283 (If we don't trade for Umenyiora the cheaper less commitment option)

                      Draft:
                      RD 1: Ndamukong Suh 6'4 305 DT (Would help entire defense DE's, LB's & DB's)
RD 2: Sean Witherspoon 6'1 241 LB (Need another quality LB to go with J. Lau)
RD 3: Danario Alexander 6'5 216 WR (big WR slowed early in career by injury)
RD 4: Trade for Osi Umenyiora 6'3 261 DE (good at applying pressure)

Resign the following restricted free agents:
                      O.J. Atogwe 5'11 210 28 FS (resign)
Alex Barron 6'7 315 27 OT (value sign)
Clifton Ryan 6’3 316 26 DT (value sign)

                      David Vobora 6’1 238 23 (value sign)

Although I am not a big Bulger fan I would not mind keeping him one more year if we could address several other areas of concern. Bulger can be serviceable and its not like we are going from a 1 win team to the Superbowl in one year. Laurent Robinson looked like he might be our best WR prior to going down last year. If he returns healthy and we get Danario Alexander a big WR who had an outstanding college year (more then a TD per game and nearly 130 yards per game) then we might have a decent WR core to go along with Jacksons running game.

Here would be our starters with the additions mentioned:

                      Defense:
                      DE – Chris Long 6'3 265 24
                      DT – Ndamukong Suh 6’4 305 (Draft Round 1)
DT- Clifton Ryan 6’3 316 26 (Resign RFA)
DE – Osi Umenyora 6’3 261 29 (Trade 4th round pick) OR Julius Peppers

                      SLB –David Vobora 6’1 238 23(Resign RFA)
                      MLB – James Laurinatis 6’2 245 23
                      WLB – Sean Witherspoon 6’1 241 (Draft Round 2)

                      CB – Ron Bartell 6'1 210 27

                      FS – O.J. Atogwe 5'11 210 28 (Resign RFA)
                      SS – James Butler 6’3 215 27

                      Offense:
                      QB – Marc Bulger
                      RB – Steven Jackson 6'2 235 26

Purge the roster of older players we have a minimum 3 year process.
                      by RamsSB99
If we really care about this team we will look at whats best for this team to build a team that can be competitive year after year. We can't expect a dramatic difference next year or the year after that. We need to plan on starting the rebuilding process now and continue the next two years. We need to hope that three years from now we can field a team that will be competitive and yet have enough young nucleus that we won't have to many holes to fill to remain competitive. That is why I believe we should look at our players that turn 30 next year and seriously consider getting any value we can for them in trade and release the ones we can't. We should target younger players via free agency but be conservative in our spending. Don't commit to large contracts on older players until maybe the second and definently the third year.

We have 24 players on our roster that will turn 30 years old or older next year. Here is a list of those players with their ages.

                      Trent Green QB 39
                      Gary Stills LB 35
                      Leonard Little DE 35
                      La'Roi Glover DT 35
                      Orlando Pace LT 34
                      Dane Looker WR 33
                      Torry Holt WR 33
                      Chris Draft LB 33
                      Jason Craft CB 33
                      Corey Chavous SS 33
                      Marc Bulger QB 32
                      Dan Kreider FB 32
                      James Hall DE 32
                      Fakhir Brown CB 32
                      Anthony Becht TE 32
                      Dante Hall PuntReturn/WR 31
                      Brandon Gorin T 31
                      Drew Bennett WR 31
                      Brett Romberg C 30
                      Travis Minor RB 30
                      Randy McMichael TE 30
                      Chris Massey LS 30
                      Todd Johnson S 31
                      Josh Brown K 30

Kickers normally live forever I would not mind keeping Josh Brown but his contract would be up before his value could even help us. We should try to get something for him as well.

                      by VegasRam
"Happy days are here again", (for those who are so inclined);)

Rams are turning things around at last
Shaw and Ziggy’s crap is in the past
Spag's is here to stay, the die is cast
Rams are back on track again

Billy’s got his eyes upon the draft
Showing everyone he’s honed his craft
In our drafts before, the pundits laughed
                      Rams are coming back again

Bulger’s finally smiling just a bit
His new center is a perfect fit
Now at last he won’t get hit and hit
Rams are going to win again

Ron Bartell has got his corner spot
And Atogwe’s going to still be hot
Hill and Butler both will get their shot
Rams are on the attack again

D-Line’s finally got a touch of gray
Looks like they may finally have their day
Anyway, it’s clear they’re here to play
Rams may get more sacks again

                      Steven Jackson’s glad he’s now a Dad
Contract’s done, so he’s no longer mad
Gonna run like hell, and catch a tad
                      Rams got running backs again

Our receivers seem to lack some age
Maybe so, but wait ‘til they engage
Other team’s DBs, they will upstage
                      Rams'll scare some D's again

As a team, this all will take some time
Lot of work ahead, an uphill climb
And I just ran out of things that rhyme
Rams are fun to watch again

So OK, I hope this finds you well
We’ll no longer hear the tolling bell
Looks like character will finally tell
                      Rams'll kick some 'A' again

Av's "Other Draft Board" (My "Big 33")
                      by AvengerRam_old
Given how the choice for the first pick has narrowed, I think it is more productive for me to post a different type of draft board from my typical "top 10" list.

I call this my "Big 33." Essentially, this is a list of 33 players who I would consider in either Round 1 or Round 2.

Let me clarify. Most of these players are not among those I'd consider with the first pick (for me, that list has only two names on it). Likewise, many of the players have little or no chance of being there at pick No. 33. Finally, there are players likely to go in the top 33 (i.e. Taylor Mays, Carlos Dunlap, Rolando McClain) who I, for various reasons, would not consider with either the Rams two picks.

All that stated, because the list has 33 players on it, the Rams will (absent a trade) have the opportunity to draft at least two of these players (they might not wish to, of course: i.e. if they take Bradford first, and the only players left from the list at #33 are Colt McCoy and Dan LeFevour - in that situation, I'd look to trade down).

This list will be important to me because I will use it (or an updated version, should I choose to one) as my checklist for Thursday and Friday of Draft Weekend.

So... here it is (listed by position):
