LB Nixon promoted from practice squad

    BY JIM THOMAS
    Tuesday, December 7, 2010

The St. Louis Rams are promoting linebacker David Nixon from the practice squad to the active roster to fill the spot created by linebacker Na'il Diggs' season-ending pectoral muscle injury. Nixon, 6-3, 225 pounds, began the year with Houston, appearing in three games for the Texans and recording 10 tackles.

Nixon began his career in 2009 as an undrafted rookie out of Brigham Young University playing for the Oakland Raiders. He appeared in three games that year for the Raiders but recorded no tackles from scrimmage. Following his release by Houston this season, the Rams signed Nixon to their practice squad on Oct. 25.

Two linebackers paid free-agent visits to Rams Park Tuesday: Maurice Simpkins and Harry Coleman. The Rams plan to sign Simpkins, 6-0, 236 pounds to the practice squad spot created by the promotion of Nixon. Simpkins finished his college career at Coastal Carolina (he also played at Catawba College) and appeared in two games earlier this season for Green Bay. Coleman, who played at LSU, spent the 2010 preseason with New Orleans.

He is described as being a hard worker, no doubt that's why we activated him, not to mention his speed. (4.5 in the 40 yard dash) He was a beast at BYU, according to comments on you tube.

Maurice Simpkins played for packers and gizzards.

Fast and light... sounds like he'll be used mainly on coverage teams and exclusively at the Will on defense.
      I believe!:ram:

Thats some real nice speed for a LB hopefully he can grasp the Defense quickly and start to produce right away.

            Practice Squad Announced!
            by chipperjones
Former University of Illinois fullback Russ Weil has been signed to the Rams’ practice squad. Others re-signed are defensive end C.J. Ah You, running back Lance Ball, offensive lineman Dustin Fry, linebacker Marc Magro, wide receiver Derek Stanley and cornerback Darius Vinnett.

The eighth spot will go to safety Eric Bassey once cornerback Ricky Manning Jr. signs his contract today.

All the practice squad members were in training camp with the Rams.

All for now . . . more following this afternoon’s practice.

I really like it. Bassey and Vinnett are good special teamers. Magro is a pretty good LB, Frye...well I havent lost hope on him, Ah You is a good practice squad guy, Im happy Weil is here, and the only people I would really be upset if they werent on here...Stanley and Ball, are!

            Hoomanawanui to 'Skins practice squad

Even though he played in eight games in both the 2010 and 2011 seasons for the Rams, including a total of 11 starts, tight end Michael Hoomanawanui still had practice squad eligibility.

After releasing Hoomanawanui from the active roster Sunday, the Rams had hoped to sign him to their practice squad. Instead, Hoomanawanui is taking the "change of scenery" route and is signing today with the Washington Redskins' practice squad according to league sources.

To free up a practice squad spot for Hoomanawanui, the Redskins released another tight end who was with the Rams this preseason _ undrafted rookie Deangelo Peterson.

A fifth-round draft pick by the Rams in 2010 out of the University of Illinois, Hoomanawanui had 20 catches for 229 yards and three touchdowns in his time with St. Louis.

Practice squad players work with the team in practice, but cannot appear in games.

            Rams announce practice squad

The Rams added seven players to their practice squad Sunday night and Monday morning, including five players who have been in St. Louis and a couple of new additions from other teams.
The practice squad in its current state includes: cornerback Marquis Johnson, linebacker Curtis Johnson, linebacker Mortty Ivy, center Drew Miller, tackle Ryan McKee, receiver Brandon McRae and receiver Danario Alexander.
Marquis Johnson, Miller, McKee, McRae and Alexander spent all or part of training camp with the Rams.
Ivy comes to St. Louis from Carolina, where he was on the Panthers practice squad last season after he came into the league as an undrafted rookie in 2009.
Curtis Johnson played his college football at Clark University in Atlanta and signed with Indianapolis as an undrafted rookie in 2008. He played seven games for the Colts that year before moving on to Dallas last season.
The Rams have room for one more player on their practice squad. That move will likely be made in the next day or two.
