  • Should Archuleta Be Moved To LB Next Year?

I personally think that the Rams should think about having Archuleta bulk up in the off-season and move him to weak side linebacker. he has much better instinct as a linebacker and he clearly is not grasping the safety position.

the Rams could use another great player next to Pisa in the Linebacker Corp and this would not cost them a draft pick. it couldn't hurt with the way the defense is playing this year.

and with all of Martz's experiments, this is one that might actually work.

    your thoughts?

Personally I would trade his arse. He has made some big plays, but he is too inconsistent for my liking. He misses far too many tackles and is weak in coverage. He also seems to be a tad bit fragile for all his worout efforts. Concussion, ankle, and back.

Agree with Ferter... we trade for a real LB

It is a shame really. I don't know why I was so transfixed by that training regime. I did think that the unique exercises would somehow immunize him from the injuries. At least its only an emotional investment whose loss I can cut.

I don't think he can bulk up sufficiently to play LB play after play (40 more LBs?). Seeing how I have seldom seen him play SS this year I'm inclined to give him the benefit of doubt that part of his problem is the fact that he has been moved all over the field. Let the LBs cover the TEs and bring Arch on support. In part, I attribute his problems to scheme.

Who would want him? He can't cover anybody. He's decent in the run game but he's missed tackles this year. And with his first round selection status, and contract status, who's going to pay him?

He needs to quit with the pinky pushups and learn how to cover someone in the passing game.

He's been a man without a position since his rookie year. He has the mentality of a LB, but not the size. Good speed and great strength for a SS, but not the coverage skills. The prevailing thought was that he has all the natural tools, surely he can learn how to cover. Well, so far, the experiment has shown otherwise. I man that can bench-press 3 times his own weight has to perk your ears a little bit. But at some point, he (and his coaches) have to realize that he's not being asked to bench-press receivers, he being asked to cover them and tackle them. Arch, those are skills, they can be learned. Get out of the weight room and learn the skills of your position.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I agree that his pass coverage skills stink and that his reliability as a tackler is highly suspect. I am still smarting over the tackle he missed in the flat in the first quarter of the atlanta game right in front of me that turned a five yard screen into a 60 yard gain. Meanwhile, why do we have him in coverage against jarvon walker?

Does he remind anyone of john lynch? More like kelly lynch.

I dont think he can bulk up to play linebacker. I think we keep him and hope that a return to health is feasible for next year. We wont get much if anything for him. I still think he can be an impact safety, but the jury is very much out on him. The bulging disc requires us to cut him some slack.

I think Adam has layed it on the line for us..the fact that we have no pass rush...good corners or a good FS doesn't help him at all. He's a SS which basically is a run supporter in the secondary that also helps out in deep coverage. It's not a position that should run man coverage very often. Cut the guy some slack...If you want to crap on anyone..put a big ole turd on Lewis..Kennedy and Polley..these guys stink...

for the past four years archuleta has been one of the best tackling defenders in the league. he rarely misses tackles in taking good angles and has an uncanny ability to shed off-of bigger opponents consistently to get to the ball carrier...

okay, now that we disagree with the above mind fart, who can give compelling reasons why they see archuleta succeeding as a pumped up linebacker...?

Re: Should Archuleta Be Moved To LB Next Year?

I hate to see Archuleta thrown under the microscope while he has been playing hurt and still remains near the top of the tackle list, but there are some valid points here.

I don't think he is big enough to play LB. His pass coverage needs some work and he should be able to improve his coverage skills. Perhaps more time training instead of working out is called for.

Certainly there must be bigger problems on defense than Arch's play.

y'know, I had the exact same thought about Little. Why not(if he stays out of prison) let him slim down a tad and move to one of the LB spots? He's obviously not dominant enought to beat the double teams that he's been shackled with this year and isn't his natural position LB? He has the speed to run just about anyone down and he might benefit from playing from a standing position.

Okay, aren't our expectations a bit too high at this point? How many defensive ends do you know who regularly break double teams, and how many of them do it without help from the other three line positions in terms of getting a rush or penetration? I don't think we should be pointing the finger at Little because of his inability to break through double teams.

At least little can draw double teams.

IMO, Arch has done a great job overall for us since his rookie year. However, this year he has the back problem and it's definitely effecting his play. Don't give up on the kid yet. Especially since he's my favorite player. :king:
