    Head Coach Mike Martz
    Wednesday, December 8, 2004

    (Opening comments)
“With everything you do in the beginning of the year, you just hope at this point, with four games to go, you’re still in the hunt, which we are. Obviously, we are a half-game up on in the division, with our destiny in our control. We are looking forward to this game in Carolina, another NFC (team), and a team that we met in the playoffs last year. We are familiar with them. We have played against (Carolina head coach) John (Fox)’s defense on several occasions, and we are somewhat familiar with him. Their defensive line is terrific. Their quarterback is playing really well. He has that big, strong arm. Even though they are without their starter at running back, (RB Nick Goings) has done a tremendous job rushing the football. The offensive line is still significant, and of course, their receiving corps is good. They are on the mend. They are on a streak, winning four in a row, and winning some tight games. It should be fun. We are looking forward to this game, and it goes without saying right now, but this is as big as it gets.”

(On if he expresses the importance of this game to his team)
“Yes, absolutely. At this point you need to. This is the time, where early in the year you start talking about this is a big game and it’s hard to do that, but at this point these are all playoff games. The significance grows each week. It’s a four-week season, and it starts with this one. We are all excited about being in this position, and this opportunity. We have done a great job defensively and given up the big play. Those are the mistakes within the defense that we are mending and resolving. I think we are kind of adapting that personality defensively, and the understanding of what we are trying to accomplish. Offensively, there are some issues that we need to mend and fix, but I’m excited about the perimeter and the offensive line and where we are heading. And I think Chris (Chandler) will do a good job for us.”

    (On QB Chris Chandler)
“When we signed him, he’s not 500-years-old, he’s 38. It doesn’t matter how old he is, he can play. He has terrific legs. He’s in there on the treadmill for 35 minutes on (level) nine. I don’t know if any of you can do that, and I know I can’t. I think that, and the fact that his arm strength hasn’t been diminished at all. He’s still on top of his game, in terms of seeing things and accuracy. All of those things, physically, would lend itself to believe that he still has a lot of football left in him. Otherwise, we would have never signed him to a two-year deal. He’s been through all of the playoffs. He’s been to a Super Bowl. He’s been there. He knows how to prepare. He knows how to get himself right. A lot of quarterbacks, and this is going to sound silly, but they don’t know themselves in big games yet. If they have not been there, (they don’t know) how they will respond. But the players look to him for guidance. They know he’s been there before, and he knows the right things to do. He’ll manage the game properly, and if it’s something he’s confused about then we’ll stay away from it and move on. He can make those clutch throws and clutch plays to win a game.”

    (On C Andy McCollum)
“The thing that Andy does, is he’s just flawless in terms of the mental aspect. Getting the right calls, his quickness, his ability to reach guys and get into linebackers, I didn’t know he could do the things that he is doing. He did them in the past. But where he is right now, to pull him and have him get on the outside linebacker is really unusual. He’s been very consistent all year long. He’s been the most consistent player in the offensive line all season. I keep saying this, and I’ve said it since the beginning of the year, he really is having a Pro-Bowl year. Regardless of what happens to us, he’s playing out there in another level and he’s doing a terrific job for us.”

    (On RB Aveion Cason)
“We brought Aveion in the event that we sustain more injuries in the backfield, but more importantly, to give us another kickoff return specialist. We know where his speed is. We are very familiar with Aveion. We had him here in the past, and I’m excited about what he might bring. In the event that we start Arlen (Harris) at halfback, which I might suspect that we do, then you would like to have Aveion returning kickoffs.”

    (On RB Steven Jackson)
“I think he’ll be ready. Obviously, it’s hard to start him if he doesn’t practice. I think he’ll be ready to play. When will he practice? Maybe Friday, I don’t know. You’re going to have to assume that you won’t have him and get Arlen ready, then if you have him, you have him. I believe we will have Marshall (Faulk) too. I think we will have all three of those backs, but in the event that we don’t, you have Aveion and we will try to keep him up on the roster to return kickoffs.”

(On keeping his defense focused and aggressive, despite the roughing the passer penalties)
“You have to be careful on how you emphasize those things, too, when you talk to the team after the game. If you let that become an issue for the football team, then it’s a distraction for everybody. Then when it does happen, it becomes a major focus for them. You have to move on. When those things are over with, they are over with. Whether it was a good call or bad call, it is what it is and you can’t change it. You have to have that resolve, or perseverance, to move on in spite of those things, and over come it. That’s really our focus. Whether it’s a sack, a turnover, a penalty, it doesn’t make a difference. (They need to) continue what they are doing. They are doing the right thing, you are doing what we are asking you to.”

(On QB Marc Bulger’s timetable for return)
“I really don’t (know). I would suspect that there would be a potential to have him next week. But whether we do or not, I don’t know. I do know this, it was a very similar injury that he sustained in Miami. He would not have been able to play that next week. I think we would be very hopeful for next week, but we’ll have to see. I think that might be a little over-optimistic.”

    (On QB Jamie Martin)
“I think, initially, we will try to get Jeff Smoker in a capacity until Jamie comes along in what we are doing mentally. I think Jeff is up to do most of the things that we do, but he hasn’t played. Jamie, the last time he played for us, brought us back in the fourth quarter on Monday Night to beat the San Francisco *****. I know he can win. We didn’t have a real good supporting cast around him when he had to play, that’s why we lost two quarterbacks and he was playing. We are a better team in that respect, and he will play better with better people around him. I’m excited that he is available to us, because he can make the throws and decisions, and run this football team the way we want our quarterback to run it.”

(On if QB Jeff Smoker will back up Chandler)
“We’ll see. I just don’t know he is in practice, or how much he has absorbed. I don’t know Jeff well enough to say that he is ready to go play in a game. I know Jamie is. Providing he has the information, he’ll play.”

(On the pressure placed on G Blaine Saipaia to stop Carolina’s Julius Peppers)
“I think every player out there feels that type of pressure. That’s why we put Blaine in that position. Blaine, obviously, understands the opportunity ahead of him. But I also think he is very confident in his physical capabilities. I’m excited. We went back and looked at that Buffalo tape. I have great confidence in him. He’s a guy that I looked at all year, throughout the season, and felt like he was going to be one of our feature starters here, eventually. When it was going to happen, I didn’t know. But he has the athleticism to line up on the edge and block a guy like Peppers, with his feet and his strength and all of those things. The experience is going to be a factor, so we’ll need to help him there.”

(On if last year’s playoff loss to Carolina will serve as a motivating factor for this game)
“The players who were here understand that, obviously, just as we as coaches do. When you start to dwell on those things, it becomes a distraction for you. That has nothing to do with this game, at this point. If you need that as an emotional lift to go and compete, you are probably in the wrong business. This team is a different team. We are a different team. We are fighting for our lives here, to try and get in the playoffs and win this division. That’s significant enough. You start talking about what was, that all becomes a distraction. We are moving forward. We are focusing on this football game and getting after that.”

    (On Carolina)
“I think they are a very power-oriented running team. Their receivers have made some big plays for them. (QB Jake Delhomme) has a big arm. He has that Brett Favre-type arm. He can zig it down the field with terrific accuracy. They have come in and out of it. Obviously, when their backs went down, they went off in a different direction a little. But they have their running game to the point where they feel very good with it. I think they are pretty well rounded at this point.”

(On how QB Chris Chandler looked)
“Good. He’s ready to go. He’s excited about playing. He has a real good grasp of what we’re trying to do. The timing of what he’s doing is really good. I’m excited for him, and I’m excited that we have him here. We were just talking at practice, that at this point in his career, to be in this situation, he can enjoy where he is, go out and have fun, make some things happen, and appreciate the opportunity. I’m sure he’ll do a good job for us.”

      (On the running backs)
“Arlen (Harris) will start. Marshall (Faulk) is ready to go, I think. We’ll just see where Steven (Jackson) is. We didn’t do anything with him (today). There’s no sense in making it (his knee) swell up again. We’ll see where he is on Sunday. If he can go, he’ll go, if not, he won’t. We’re going to get him back in short order. He’s not going to be out very long. If he misses this one, I’m sure he will be back the following week. I don’t know if he’ll miss this one, we’ve just been very cautious with him.”

      (On the defense)
“I think knowledge of what we’re doing is the key. We do so many different things every week, like we do offensively. To be able to do those things, make those adjustment, and to do it at a high level or with great speed, and without being tentative. That tentativeness is where we’ve been all year, and we’re starting to shake that now. That doesn’t mean that we’re not going to make mistakes. They’re playing now with enthusiasm, because I think they are a lot more sure of what they’re doing out there.”

      (On RB Arlen Harris)
“He’s a terrific runner. He’s hard to knock off his feet. He’s real patient, and his running reads are really outstanding. He’s a much better player than he was a year ago. Last year, he hadn’t worked for two years basically, and he wasn’t sure he was going to make the team. Obviously he more than made the team, but he played well last year. Now with a full offseason, physically he’s so much further along, and he has a good grasp of what we’re doing.”

(On him practicing at fullback during training camp)
“We were just trying to figure out a way to get him on the field. That was the whole idea about being a fullback. We just felt like he was too good of a player to be standing next to me on the sideline during the game. Once we realized that he had ascended from where he was a year ago with his running skills, we knew we had to get him in the game as a runner. He’ll run very well (on Sunday). If we do our job up front, I’m not worried about Arlen at all.”

(On who is going to be the backup quarterback this Sunday)
“I think initially we will go into the game with Jeff (Smoker) because he knows what is going out. I stuck him in practice yesterday in the blitz period, and I was very pleased with how well he responded. He did a great job. He’s...

      (Opening statement)
“Obviously, a huge disappointment is an understatement, I would guess. I think at the beginning of the game, defensively, they put a great deal of pressure on us, and we didn’t handle the pressure very well. From a coaching standpoint, at the quarterback position, I felt like we needed to make a change at the quarter. QB Jamie (Martin) came in, with very little knowledge about what we’re doing, and no experience at all at that point, and he did a remarkable job in my opinion. I just felt like at that point we needed to make a change. RB Marshall (Faulk) stayed in the game for protection purposes. All the things that they were doing, I’m not sure if RB Steven (Jackson) would have been able to deal with. In fact, I know he wouldn’t have been able to deal with some of the pickups we were asking him to do. They did a good job on us, they really did. They out-coached us and they out-played us. Defensively, normally when we see a pressure like that, we’ve always dealt with that well, we’ve always looked forward to that type of pressure, but it was not a situation where we could do that with the quarterback position, obviously. When we get our wide receivers one-on-one, we would like to protect the quarterback and get the ball down the field to them as much as we can, and we just weren’t able to do that. In terms of the running game, they ended up with and eight-man front inside, played more or less kind of a bear defense, and it changes everything we do. At that point you relish the ability to throw the ball, and that’s how we’ve won in the past. We were able to get a little bit of a running game going at the end. I wasn’t aware of Steven (Jackson) not being in the game. Wilbert’s (Montgomery) judgement from what they were doing, from a blitz pickup standpoint, Marshall (Faulk) was clued in to it, as he always is, and Steven (Jackson), in his mind, would have probably struggled with some of that. Marshall (Faulk) played very well. We feel he’s back, like he was in the very beginning of the season. I’m very pleased with him. We have to pick up the pieces from this point, and move on. Obviously, I’m sure Philadelphia doesn’t feel sorry for us. I think we can(pick up the pieces), there’s no question about it. We get QB Marc (Bulger) back this week. I can’t stress to you enough how proud I am of Jamie (Martin), and the job that he did in this game, and how well he played. I don’t know if anybody really appreciates what he did in that game, and the pressure that he went into that game under. Here’s a team that is contending for the division, it’s all on his shoulders, and he hadn’t had a snap at practice with the first string offense. To go in there just from papers and tests, to play as well as he did, is actually pretty remarkable. LG Larry Turner did an excellent job as a rookie, he competed pretty well. RT Blaine (Saipaia) got better. There are some good...

      (Opening statement)
“Obviously we’re all disappointed in the way that we played that football game, particularly on offense. I think up front we had some issues, we did not play very well. We did not protect the quarterback, and he got a little rattled. We just could not get things going offensively. To have that many turnovers, and to hold them to 20 points, is kind of a miraculous job by the defense. We struggled early on defense. We gave up three real big plays in a row on that first series, but after the first quarter, I thought defensively we played really well. I was very pleased with CB Jerametrius Butler. I think (Antuan) Edwards is coming along just fine. He’s doing a good job. I think DE Bryce (Fisher) probably played his best football game since he’s been here. I really felt like RB Arlen Harris played exceptionally well. I think RT Blaine (Saipaia) probably played as well, if not the best, of all the offensive linemen. He basically blocked (Julius) Peppers. On the touchdown throw he had him by himself. We were doubling the tackle with our right guard and our center, and he had him by himself. It was a long count pass, and he blocked him. He’s good enough, and he’s going to be fine, he just needs to play. I love his toughness and his competitiveness. Offensively, there are some things that we need to clean up. QB Chris (Chandler) just got off the mark here a little bit. He got pressured early, and couldn’t settle down. I didn’t do a much better job of helping him in what we called. It’s kind of a flow of things that you get into, but you have to be able to run the ball and mix it in there. Kind of the nature of the way that game went early, we felt like we had to play a fast-paced game. As it turned out, that was not the case. If I had to choose to do it again, I wouldn’t have done that. I would have mixed it up a little bit better. I was just afraid of it getting away from us.”

(On simplifying the offense for QB Chris Chandler)
No, not really. In our passing game, you can have seven or eight passes that are really the same read for him. Just the mechanics of what you do here as a quarterback, in terms of what you’re looking at, how you make decisions, and how quick those decisions are, those kinds of things. He’s had a lot of systems now, and a lot of different coaching, and when you get under pressure like that, sometimes you revert back to another system, and how you would deal with things in the past. I kind of think that’s where he is. I really do think he will be fine. He’s just devastated.”

(On how QB Marc Bulger is feeling)
“He threw today. It was a little sore. Who knows, we may have him, but I’m not going to count on it. They gave him some treatment this afternoon, and we’ll see. He has to feel good about the shoulder holding together and playing. The structure has never been an issue. It’s just the pain that...

      QB Chris Chandler

(On Head Coach Mike Martz saying that he should have play called a little bit differently)
“It has nothing to do with Mike (Martz play calling). It was just my bad day.”

      (On Arizona’s defense)
“We just started looking at what they’re doing this morning, so I haven’t studied them a whole lot. They have some good guys up front, and they play really hard. They have been playing extremely hard, although their record is not what they want it to be. At home they’ve always played better.”

(On it being a must win game)
“Oh yeah. It seems like every week it’s like that. We have a big three weeks coming up.”

(On coming out on offense with big plays early)
“Especially on the road it is always important to try and get off early. With what happened last week, I think even more so. We’re going to try and come out real strong and real fast.”

      WR Shaun McDonald

      (On going back to Arizona)
“It’s fun to go back home and play in front of your family. Especially to go back to a stadium where I played a lot of games. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

(On the lack of blocking on the punt returns)
“I think it falls on all 11 of us. Sometimes we’re there blocking good, and I’m not running right. I think it’s all 11, so we all have to get it right. I’m getting antsy to make a play. You want to get back there to make plays, that’s why they put you back there. I get frustrated because I want to make plays on the punt team.”

(On if he thinks about bad games after they’re over)
“Yeah, you think about it anytime you lose, especially if you’re a competitor. If you like playing the game you’re going to hurt from getting a loss. It stays with you for a little bit, but you have to try and get it out of your mind as fast as possible and think about next week.”

(On how much of an adjustment is it with a different quarterback)
“It’s different, but as wide outs we just have to do what we do and let him worry about what he has to do. We just have to get to the spots where we need to be, so we can be there for him and try and help him out some more.”

      DE Anthony Hargrove

      (On Arizona)
“We beat them the first time. We are going to come out and hopefully shut the run down and make them throw an air attack. We’re going to try and put pressure on their quarterback so he doesn’t throw it to the big receivers that they have. We are going to try and eliminate their big players.”

      (On the Rams’ defense)
“We’ve came out these last two weeks and shown that we can play good defense. Like coach Martz said, we’re starting to really come together. We are starting to fit together, and get a feel for the way each other plays.”

      RT Blaine Saipaia
