    Rams | Barron Negotiations Underway
    Sat, 9 Jul 2005 21:42:12 -0700

Thomas Grant Jr., of the Times and Democrat, reports the St. Louis Rams have started negotiations with agent Roosevelt Barnes of Maximum Sports Management about a contract for Rams' rookie OT Alex Barron. The deal is expected to be a lucrative contract for the second offensive lineman taken in this year's NFL draft. For now, Barron's focus is mastering the Rams' blocking schemes while he waits for a deal to get done.

Rams | Barron Trying to Adjust to the NFL

Thomas Grant Jr., of the Times and Democrat, reports St. Louis Rams rookie OT Alex Barron is trying to adjust to his role as an NFL player. The players are much quicker, stronger and, in some cases, craftier than ever and the coaches see things through a "win now" mentality. "It's been like going back to school," said Barron in a telephone interview with Grant prior to a Friday, July 8, workout. "All the players are reading and studying, but on a whole different level and there's a little bit more urgency involved." Barron has struggled with his new position, right tackle. He was named the starter earlier in the offseason by Rams' head coach Mike Martz, but at a recent minicamp Barron was demoted to No. 2. "I'm a rookie like all the other rookies," Barron said. "The fact I had to change positions had some weight on it. It's just part of the transition that I've got to try to make and then I'll be ready to see what's going on." Making the mental adjustment to the NFL has been just as challenging for Barron as the physical side.

Have any of the 1st rounders signed yet? I don't know of any. Wouldn't it be nice to have the quickest overall draft pick signing (Carter) AND the quickest 1st round signing (Barron)?

None of the first rounders have signed yet. usually doesnt happen until much closer to camp, when the teams figure out how much they have left under their rookie cap amounts after signing the other guys. the first rounders kind of slot in based on the money the guys around them get.

It amazes me how much press he's getting, especially some moron reporting that he's already been "demoted" after a week of mini-camp.

...and if I'm not mistaken, Pace not only didn't set the world on fire his first year, but actually played rather badly, and HE didn't have to switch positions. :tut

Sieler can I get more cowbell please? I gotta have more cowbell.

Barron has to adjust like every other rookie, problem is Martz shouldnt have handed the guy the starting nod right off the bat. Make the man work for it, that's what people are jumping on. They seen he was announced 1st string and then demoted and all of the sudden it's a big thing. ATTENTION MEDIA HES A ROOKIE! Every rookie struggles in some way or another. Barron will be fine and if hes not it just goes to show you the draft is one big crap shoot.

I was glad he make him the starter then hit the demote button. It might just make him a far better player and quicker. He wont hav e that normal "Ideserve to start attitude" hanging around him same as a lot of round 1 draft picks do.

And if that the biggest "mistake" Martz makes this year, its going to be a bloody good year hehee

He was on the block, we know that. I am wondering how close we came. Seems like the pickup of Trautwein could have been in anticipation of Barron being gone.

Regardless, good developmental OT for the future, a future that Barron most likely won't be in.

                                Of the Post-Dispatch
                                Saturday, Apr. 30 2005

A little more than a year ago, Rams general manager Charley Armey was watching
film of several University of Miami defenders in preparation for the draft.

On one particular tape, the Hurricanes were playing Florida State. After
watching Seminoles offensive tackle Alex Barron destroy Miami linebackers
Jonathan Vilma and D.J. Williams on play after play, Armey turned to Rams'
scouting assistant Brad Holmes and said, "Is this your cousin?"

                                Affirmative.

Holmes, in his second year with the Rams, was a pass rusher of some repute a
few years back for North Carolina A&T. Before his junior season in 2000, a
season in which he would register 8 1/2 sacks, Holmes decided to see what
cousin Alex had as a pass blocker.

Barron already had built a football reputation at Wilkinson High in Orangeburg,
S.C. One college recruiting service, Prep Star, had him rated as the third-best
                                offensive lineman in the country.

Holmes and his cousin went out in Barron's backyard for some one-on-one pass
                                rush drills.

"I couldn't get around him," Holmes said.

Not many can, which explains why the Rams made Barron their first-round pick,
No. 19 overall, in the NFL draft last week. Coach Mike Martz wasted little time
                                with Barron.

"We're handing him the starting job at right tackle," Martz said Friday. "It's
                                his."

Then, in an unusual move, Martz made a request to the media at Rams rookie
                                minicamp.

"The one thing I'd ask all of you with Alex is to have patience," Martz said.
"Because he's going to have some tough moments. But he is our right tackle.
We're making that commitment to him. We're trying to get him ready as quickly
                                as we can.

"I know he's going to be scrutinized closely. I know he'll be nervous. This is
a big deal to him. ... Bear in mind, two, three years from now, I think we'll
                                have a real special player."

Barron was a two-time consensus All-American at Florida State and was among
three finalists for the Outland Trophy last season. But Barron did not expect
after getting drafted to be named a starter in April.

"I was overwhelmed by it," the soft-spoken Barron said Saturday. "I was kind of
shocked a little bit. But they believe I can get the job done, and I'm just
going to try to do my best to help the team."

Barron has many physical attributes that separate him from the pack. But it
begins and ends with his amazing wingspan. From one outstretched arm...

Actually after 62 attempts and only one sack given up the pass blocking was pretty good!!!

What do Alex Barron and Yao Ming have in common?
                                by Rambos
Vanden Bosch was impressed with Barron, the 19th overall pick in the draft.

"He's got long arms, so it's tough to do a lot of things pass-rush wise against him and when he came in, I didn't beat him much," Vanden Bosch said. "So, I thought he stepped up and responded really well."

Alex wingspan is equal to Yao Mingís height 7í 6Ē.

I donít want to say it but I will, I said he would be in by game three, going ahead look for the post itís there. We just need to find ways to win games; by midseason we will be a force.
