Rams safety Lamarcus Joyner to sign franchise tag

    • By Kevin Patra
Los Angeles Rams franchise tagged safety Lamarcus Joyner will show up for the beginning of offseason workouts today.
The safety plans to sign his $11.287 million franchise tag on Monday before taking part in the team's offseason conditioning program, Joyner's agent, Sunny Shah, told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.
Joyner's plan is a positive development for the star-studded Rams defense. The safety could have decided to hold off signing the franchise tender until later in the summer, seeking a long-term deal in the process. Until tagged players sign the tender, they are not under contract. Therefore it would not be considered a hold-out situation subject to fines for skipping training camp.
The Rams prioritized keeping Joyner in place over receiver Sammy Watkins this offseason. Joyner is a key chess piece in Wade Phillips' defense. The 27-year old moved to safety in 2017, thriving in that role. His ability to drop down and play slot corner, where he spent his first three years, makes the 5-foot-8 defender a commodity in today's NFL.
Keeping Joyner while adding corners Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib this offseason, the Rams built a secondary that has the pieces to be one of the best in the NFL in 2018.
The Rams will attempt to work out a long-term solution to keep Joyner in L.A. Sides have until July 16 to hammer out a multiyear deal. If they can't get it done by that date, Joyner will play this season on the franchise tag. L.A. could then tag him again next offseason for $13.544 million (120 percent of his 2018 salary) or he'd hit the open market.

    Yes, positive move for sure.

LJ seems to be a good character / good player component in the team. Good to have as part of our D.

Rams, Joyner not expected to agree to long term deal before deadline
    by Nick
    Adam Schefter

No long-term deal is expected between Los Angeles and Rams’ franchised S Lamarcus Joyner by Monday’s 4 pm ET deadline, though the two sides continue talking, per league sources. If no deal, Joyner would be scheduled to become a free agent after this season.

Rams Consider Transition Tag For Trumaine Johnson
    by ramsbruce
Posted by Michael David Smith on February 20, 2016, 2:24 PM EST

The Los Angeles Rams may use the transition tag to retain cornerback Trumaine Johnson. Johnson, who had seven interceptions last season, is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the start of the league year. There’s been talk that Johnson could be franchised, but Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Rams might place the transition tag, not the franchise tag, on Johnson if the two sides don’t reach a long-term deal.

Like the franchise tag, the transition tag gives a team the right to match an offer one of its free agents signs. So if the Rams put the transition tag on Johnson and he signs with another team, they could choose to keep him by matching the offer. That’s what the Browns did two years ago with center Alex Mack, who signed an offer sheet with the Jaguars that the Browns matched.

For the Rams, the advantage to using the transition tag instead of the franchise tag is that it wouldn’t cost them as much if Johnson ends up signing the tender offer and playing this season on the tag. The franchise tag salary for cornerbacks this season is expected to be $13.7 million, while the transition tag salary for cornerbacks is expected to be $11.7 million.

Last year, one player got the transition tag: Dolphins tight end Charles Clay, who ended up signing an offer sheet with the Bills that the Dolphins declined to match. When a transition tagged player switches teams, the original team does not get draft pick compensation....

Snead: Rams not planning to use franchise tag in 2019

INDIANAPOLIS — After using the franchise tag for three consecutive years on a defensive back, the Rams likely will not be going down that same path in 2019.

“At this point, we don’t plan on using it,” general manager Les Snead said of the franchise tag at his Combine press conference on Thursday.

The deadline to tag a player is next Tuesday, March 5 at 1 p.m. PT.

“We've got a few days to determine,” Snead said. “Right now, we definitely do not plan on using it.”

Los Angeles placed the franchise tag on cornerback Trumaine Johnson during the 2016 and 2017 offseasons, before utilizing the same tool for safety Lamarcus Joyner last year. Joyner and outside linebacker Dante Fowler were considered potential targets for Los Angeles’ tag in 2019.

On Joyner in particular, Snead said, “[W]e tried to get a long-term [deal] done last year but wasn’t able to get that done. So I do think he’s someone that may want to test that market and see what’s out there for him.”

There are three types of tags that all NFL teams are able to use for one player — the exclusive franchise tag, the non-exclusive franchise tag, and the transition tag. The exclusive tag is just what it sounds like — if it’s placed on a player, he may not negotiate with other teams. The non-exclusive tag allows the player to negotiate with other teams, but if a deal is struck, the tagging team is entitled to compensation. And the transition tag allows the tagging team the ability to match any deal reached on the open market.

Los Angeles has a few notable players who will be unrestricted free agents at the start of the new league year on March, including starters Joyner, Fowler, defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh, and left guard Rodger Saffold.

Schefter: Rams will franchise tag Trumaine Johnson
    by AvengerRam
    My thoughts:

    1. Johnson is a guy we can't lose. He's our best DB by far, and has rare size for the CB position, making him a guy who can take on the bigger receivers.

    2. I'm not thrilled about paying him franchise tag money. My hope is that this move is intended to secure his services with the hope of reaching a long-term deal later.
