Giants' loss makes Spagnuolo available to talk
      By Jim Thomas
      Monday, Jan. 12 2009
Steve Spagnuolo is available as a result of the New York Giants' 23-11 upset
loss Sunday to Philadelphia in the NFC playoffs.

Now, the Rams must figure out how or even if the Giants' defensive
coordinator fits into their head-coaching plans. Rams general manager Billy
Devaney has known Spagnuolo for years and considers him a good friend. With
that in mind, Spagnuolo probably advances to finalist interview status with the
Rams this week in Los Angeles if Spagnuolo is willing.

But there is competition for his services. Spagnuolo, 49, already has been
interviewed by Denver and the New York Jets for their head-coaching vacancies.
As of early Sunday evening, the Rams still hadn't requested permission from the
      Giants to speak with Spagnuolo.

But that's a mere formality. Under league guidelines, once a candidate is given
permission to talk to one team, he can't be blocked from interviewing with

Devaney had a busy Sunday, interviewing Baltimore Ravens defensive
coordinator-assistant head coach Rex Ryan in the morning in Baltimore. Ryan
interviewed with the Jets later Sunday.

"They were standard meetings and they went well," Ryan told the Balitmore Sun
on Sunday night. "Now we're going to see what happens."

Ryan's interview with the Rams lasted about three hours. His Jets interview
lasted about five hours and included team owner Woody Johnson.

From a Rams standpoint, early indications are that Ryan's interview with them
went well. Devaney feels like he has viable options for the next head coach, no
matter what the next few days bring.

Following the Ryan interview, Devaney flew back to St. Louis, where he was
scheduled to interview Mike Williams of the San Francisco *****' front office
Sunday night for the Rams' position of director of pro personnel.

The Post-Dispatch has learned that New England offensive
coordinator-quarterbacks coach Josh McDaniels never made it to St. Louis on
Friday evening for his head-coaching interview. McDaniels was tied up with a
second interview with Denver and never made it out of New England. Instead he
spoke with Devaney on the phone. Reports out of Denver on Sunday night said the
      Broncos had hired McDaniels.

Devaney is leaving today for Los Angeles, where Minnesota defensive
coordinator-assistant head coach Leslie Frazier will have his finalist
      interview with team ownership Tuesday.

So far, current Rams coach Jim Haslett is the only other known finalist.

However, league sources told the Post-Dispatch that there apparently...

BREAKING NEWS: Rams hire Giants DC Steve Spagnuolo to be next HC
      by THOLTFAN81
NY Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will be the new head coach of the St. Louis Rams.

The Rams and Spagnuolo are currently negotiating the terms of his contract and indications are that we can expect the announcement of the hiring later today.

At this time no news conference is planned for Saturday at Rams Park.

Spagnuolo, 49, was the Giants defensive coordinator in 2007 and 2008 and came up with the game plan that resulted in five sacks of Tom Brady and a shocking upset of the undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

Before that, Spagnuolo learned his trade under acclaimed Philadelphia defensive coordinator Jim Johnson, working as an Eagles defensive assistant from 1999-2006.

Rams GM Billy and Spagnuolo have been friends for many years and that relationship obviously created a trust factor that helped Spagnuolo feel comfortable about taking the Rams job.

Spagnuolo wowed the Rams' brass with a presentation in Los Angeles on Thursday.

      Congrats to Devaney and Rosenbloom.
