    Born Again Fan

    Hey Rams Fans,

    I'm a born-again Rams fan born in St. Louis but at home in Omaha. The Bears are my first love but now that the Rams seem to be heading in the right direction I thought I'd jump back on board (on the ground floor).

    Here's to a good season!

    Prepare for a long frustrating road. I hate to admit that I don't think we've hit bottom yet. Case in point: O-line is still rebuilding, going to have to turn the offense over to a Rookie QB, Steven Jackson doesn't have a legit backup and WR's don't draw any attention away from the running game. Our TE's don't add to the passing game because they have to be too concerned with helping block our porous line. Oh yeah and our Def isn't what you might call a hot commodity. Our best player Atogwe will probably be traded away(or released - we have a history of just releasing good players) if we don't give him a serious contract. Best young bright spot is Lauranitis. Our last two first round picks Long and Carricker aren't earning their paychecks either.

      As a Rams Fan, what are you thankful for?

      Happy Thanksgiving everyone. In a year where most thought we'd only be slightly better than last year's sad 1-15 record, there is much to be thankful for as a Rams fan. So why don't you list one thing you are thankful for this year as a Rams fan. I know there are MANY things to be thankful for, but just list one thing so more people can get in on it.

      I'll start.

      I'm thankful that Chris Long is finally shutting the mouths of all his haters. He had big shoes to fill living in the shadow of his dad, and living up to the expectations that come with being the 2nd overall draft pick. He's turned into a RTs worst nightmare this year, and is an integral part of our defense's turn around this year.

      Yesterday, we learned that James Laurinaitis has a chest injury. At this point, it appears that the injury is relatively minor. However, regardless of how this plays out, I was somewhat taken aback by the knee-jerk response of several Rams fans.

      Within moments of the injury report, many fans (here and on other sites), went immediately into “Chicken Little” mode – exclaiming that the sky was falling and postulating that the Rams’ interest in Ben Leber must be viewed as proof that JL’s injury is more significant than the reports indicate.

      I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by this reaction. Years of futility and frustration has clearly impacted the fan base. Indeed, it has gotten to the point at which the term SOSAR (“Same Old Sorry A__ Rams”) is no longer a mere insult uttered by the fans of rivals, but rather is a term commonly utilized by Rams fans themselves.

      My question is… shouldn’t we be moving on from that mindset?

      While nobody knows exactly what the future holds, even the most pessimistic fan should feel compelled to acknowledge the positive indicators. The Rams have a new QB who was the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. They have drafted solid players, if not emerging stars, at key spots such as OT, TE, DE, MLB and CB. They have a new owner with DEEEEEEP pockets. They have a coaching staff/Front Office that seems to be truly hitting its stride. They have upgraded their roster with key free agent acquisitions. And… on the field… they went from one win in 2009 to seven in 2010.

      Simply put, these are not Skip Rosenbloom’s Mother’s St. Louis Rams. This is a new team that has a lot of promise.

      As fans, we should not wear blinders or… worse yet… “rose-colored glasses.” It is entirely legitimate to be concerned about the tough upcoming schedule, the inevitable loss of players to injury, and the remaining holes in the roster.

      But shouldn’t that be tempered by a bit of faith? A bit of optimism? A bit of hope?

      I know what some of you will say: “there goes Av again… telling fans how they should think.” Well, to those who would respond in such a manner, let me be frank.

      The Rams do NOT have the most loyal fan base in all of sports. I wish they did, but they don’t. I’d like to see the fan base strive to climb that list, and I think now is the perfect time to start.

      Now another Rams season has ended. Hopes, dreams and expectations of Rams fans have been fulfilled or dashed. For the Rams team, the burning of August has come to championship fruition or the bitter cold of winter is now a reality in the sense of goals not met.

      The faces and names will change. The competitive juices will flow. Goals will once again be set. The burning in August will return. The Rams team will live on.

      And what to become of the Rams fans....For them, it will begin again, of this, I am certain.

      The fond memories, from the youth of a Rams fan, are my proof.

      It is mid-november and the Rams are doing well. Life for a young Rams fan is good and football, the sport he loves, lives on.

      The football uniform from the age of four no longer fits. The Tops football cards are in a shoe box. The years before becoming a part of a team count not. The burning sensation from the most recent August has long since passed.

      A young Rams fan thinks not of these things, for now, they are tucked away as keepsakes. Years of practice and competing on the field of play would end here. The young Rams fan knows not of this. Certainly he would play football forever and the sport he loves will never die in his mind.

      For him it is now the last of an eight game season. It is late in the game, his team will not win. All the team can do now is erase the goose egg on the scoreboard.

      The young Rams fan is on the field, when the first string defense recovers a fumble, thirty yards from the opponents goal. He will never know why the coach calls for the second string offense and at this point he cares not.

      He breaks the huddle with the team and gets set at his halfback position. His number has been called and he concentrates on the snap count. He is determined to take the handoff and hit the gap hard on the right side of big Jim.

      The block that big Jim delivers opens a huge hole. The young Rams fan is quickly into the secondary. The goal line is ever so close and he knows he is going to cross it. Alas, a defender has other ideas and he tackles the young Rams fan just two yards shy of the goal line.

      Time is now of the essence as the young Rams fan takes the huddle with his teammates. "Let's run it again" he says to the QB, for he knows he can score the touchdown behind the block of big Jim.

      Big Jim agrees and the QB barks out "32 smash on two"

      The young Rams fan and his teammates break the huddle. This will be the final play of the game and season. As he breaks out of his stance and takes the handoff, he sees a strong push by the goal line defense. On the right side of big Jim, the young Rams fan is small and quick enough to dive into a sliver of a hole.

      At the end of the play, under a pile of bodies, lies a young Rams fan. For a moment,...

      I'm not a bandwagon fan. I am from the STL and I root for the Rams because as a kid, it was the talk around town. Everywhere you turned, it was all about the LA Rams moving to STL. We were happy to have a football team and were hoping if they were anything like our Cardinals, it was going to be on helluva ride.

      4 years later, something magical happened. I was only in the 8th grade and our hometown was scared when Trent Green went down. They thought no one would watch or buy tickets. So believe it or not, dominoes stepped in. They made a deal when Kurt Warner was named starter that they would take a dollar off for every touchdown the rams scored. I remember the second week of the season, they scored 5 TD's and a pizza was 2 bucks.

      Unless something like this happens, I no longer have a reason to watch football. I know some of you older fans are thinking this younger generation gives up to easy but lets be serious.

      In 2010, we had a chance to get to the playoffs. All we had to do was go 8-8 and we couldn't do it. Our division was the laughing stock. All teams made changes and let me see....The Whiners and Seahawks are in the talk every year about the Superbowl and the Cardinals won 10 games and are now leading our division and look at the Rams.

      We have an old school minded coach who seems to get out coached in every game unless he pulls out some special teams tricks. This is an offensive league period. All defensive minded coaches are looking terrible and Fisher is no exception to the rule. His overall record as a coach is barely over .500. What in the blue hell was he supposed to do in STL?

      I am officially ashamed to be a Rams fan. I haven't touched my Jerseys, my Rams snuggy, my giant sign that reads "Rams Drive," or my Rams coffee cup. I have a co worker that's a Whiner fan and another that's a Cardinals fan and I find myself leaving and actually doing work when football is mentioned. (Doesn't help my boss is a Cowboys fan....)

      People actually feel sorry for me when I say I'm a Rams fan. They genuinely look sorry in the face and it freaking sucks. 5 years ago, I was still having hope even at 2-14. Now, I've just given up. The Rams is just a bunch of excuses with a coach who "can't get with the times."

      You can talk about the Jags or Raiders all you want but we are the worst. We were in the same situation as the Whiners, Cardinals, and Seahawks and in the EXACT SAME AMOUNT OF TIME AND 3 EXTRA 1ST ROUND PICKS we are the same pathetic team and they are all playoff worthy.

      ENOUGH OF THIS CRAP! No more optimism. We've been waiting for 11 years for this mysterious thing called "next season" but in the end, next season ends up being last season over and over and over and over and over and over again. Seems like STL is where football players go to die. Tavon Austin needs to leave so he can...

      I know times are hard, but lately, things are getting a tad bit tedious around here. The problem is, there are too many posters who can't distinguish between cliche and actual insight. Seriously, if I want to read hackneyed, knee-jerk reactions masquerading as analysis, I'll read a Bernie column.

      So... to borrow from Jeff Foxworthy, here's my list titled...

      You might be a boring Rams fan.

      If you think posts that communicate nothing more than "Bulger sucks" are insightful... you might be a boring Rams fan.

      If you think that you can diagnose Steven Jackson and label him "soft"... you might be a boring Rams fan.

      If you are more interested in Kurt Warner's stats than the Rams' results... you might be a boring Rams fan.

      If you are still talking about the Rams moving back to Los Angeles... you might be a boring Rams fan.

      If you can't tell the difference between overall poor drafting and labeling every pick made by the Rams a "bust"... you might be a boring Rams fan.

      Oh... and if you think Tim Tebow is the solution to the Rams' problems... you might be a boring Rams fan, an insufferable Gator fan, and a redneck.
